Little Orphan Addy?
We often observe in clients a serious drive to launch a web site and meet a deadline, be it an upcoming trade show, a planned radio announcement, or simply a pre-purchased advertisement which will make mention of the currently empty URL. The drive to launch is exhilarating for both clients and for our team, and though we are pros when it comes to meeting these tight deadlines with vigor and a result to be proud of, we also wish to remind our clients that site development doesn't end with launch. We've worked together and achieved a site to be proud of, now is not the time to relax, now you should be thinking "what's next".
The Internet is constantly moving, changing and evolving. A side effect of all this kinetic media is that the web audience has grown to expect fresh content which is pertinent to the now. Planning ahead will help avoid missteps contrary to your web marketing goals and also removes much of the stress involved in keeping your site current. Planning ahead can also have the pleasant benefit of reducing your overall development costs.
For example, if you know that your goal is to be selling products online by the end of 2007, alerting your development team now will allow them to plan accommodations into the initial build which will save man hours later when the store is ready to be implemented.
Existing sites also benefit from a pre-planned marketing and development strategy. Often major change can be made in stages which partition your costs into more manageable chunks. Giving your audience smaller, yet more frequent updates can actually be more effective than launching a major update in one fell swoop. Frequent, yet small, content injections can keep your business in the forefront of your customer's minds. If you haven't yet done so, consider publishing an e-newsletter which complements the efforts of your web site and provides reference and reason for your customers to pay it a visit.
As mentioned earlier, the web is a kinetic animal. We strive to bring recommendations to our clients on how new technologies can work for their particular business goals. Yet don't be afraid to make the first move and get us actively involved in maintaining that initial launch fervor throughout the life of your site
